New Video: Army Painter Fanatic Starter Set vs Warhammer – with a Hawk Sable Brush on Standby

Starter sets are where most people’s painting begins, so which one gives a beginner the better start? In Is The Army Painter Fanatic Starter Set better than Warhammer's?, Alex from Alex Paints puts The Army Painter’s Fanatic starter set up against Games Workshop’s.

If the video doesn’t load above, watch it on YouTube.

Where Hawk comes in

Alex commits to using the Army Painter starter brush for as long as it holds up, but says on camera that if it lets him down he will switch to his affordable Kolinsky sable from Hawk Miniatures, which he links in the description alongside a Cryptic Cabin brush. This is one of the earliest videos where Alex mentions Hawk – he had picked up his first Hawk brushes at Scale Scotland only a few weeks before – and he promises a dedicated brushes video, which became Brushes & Brush Control Explained for Beginners.

The comparison

The video covers the paint range and colour choices in each box, the quality of the included brush, the miniatures, and which set Alex would actually hand to a new painter.

Alex’s channel, Alex Paints, is worth a subscribe if you paint Warhammer or any other small things – it’s one of the more honest voices in the hobby, and he only recommends what he actually uses.
