Faces put more people off than any other part of a miniature. In Painting Faces and skin for ABSOLUTE beginners, Alex from Alex Paints strips the process back to basics on one of Taro Modelmaker’s practice face panels.

The brush
Right at the start Alex explains his tools: his “trusty Hawk Miniatures brush” for all of the painting, and a larger Cryptic Cabin brush only for the washes. Skin is layered work – lots of thin, controlled strokes – and a Kolinsky sable point that holds its shape makes it far less frustrating. The method
Alex works through base tone, shading, mid-tones and highlights, then eyes, with the principles applying to any skin on any miniature. As he says: keep the eyes to the face, unless you want it to get weird.
